DESCRIPTION

Verbascum Thapsus

Aaron’s rod

Mullein can be sown indoors or Direct.

SOWING DIRECT

Sow a small pinch of seeds about 18 inches apart on the surface of ordinary well-drained soil, towards the back of the border in a sunny location if possible. Clumps of seedling and low rosettes will arise in the first year. Thin the seedlings out 18 inches apart. By the second year a tall upright stem shoots up from the centre of the rosette and pretty yellow flowers develop along the entire length of the stem from June – September.

SOWING INDOORS

Sow 6 – 8 weeks before planting outdoors.

Mullein has long tap roots so it would be advisable to use root trainers.

Use good seed compost and cover very lightly.

Avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing.

Place in a propagator or warm place to maintain a temperature of 15 – 18 degrees C (60 – 65 degrees F)

Keep soil slightly moist but not wet.

After germination reduce the moisture levels, allowing the growing medium to dry out slightly before watering to help promote rooting.

They are usually ready for transplanting between 6 – 8 weeks.

Harden off and plant out when all risk of frost has passed.

Great mullein seeds can be somewhat erratic to germinate.

To attain continuous flowering each year seeds would need to be sown in 2 successive seasons.
