Rubia tinctorum

The roots of this ancient plants are rich in alizarin and are the source of a strong red dye. The uniforms of the British Red Coats were dyed with madder root before the introduction of synthetic dyes.

Madder is a perennial plant growing to a height of 100cm. It has slender jointed stems which are covered with short prickly leaves. The flowers are small yellow and bell shaped and in the autumn they produce small black seeds resembling black peppercorns.

Madder can be propagated from seed, root or shoot division.

The colour yielded varies from red to orange depending on the mineral content of the soil and water and the temperature of the dye bath. Madder roots cannot successfully be used for dyeing until the plants have been established for 4 years.

Madder produces a better red when dyed in hard water conditions therefore the addition of calcium carbonate is helpful.

The roots produce more alizarin if the soil is limed in the winter.

Buying rhizomes will shorten the waiting period by about two years.

They will need to be planted out about 12 – 18 inches apart – they are a sprawling plant and require plenty of room.

These rhizomes are not for dyeing now – they are for planting and will be ready to harvest in another 2 years.
