Description

COREOPSIS tinctoria – also known as golden tickseed is an easy plant to grow. It will thrive in most soil but does require full sun.

Sow Indoors

Sow indoors 6 – 8 weeks before outdoor planting time in good seed compost about 1/2 inch deep.

Keep the soil moist at about 70 – 75 degrees F.

Seedling emerge after about 15 – 20 days.

When the seedlings appear – provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill.

If you are growing in small cells, transplant the seedlings to 3 – 4-inch pots when they have at least 2 pairs of true leaves before transplanting into the garden so they have enough room to develop a strong root system.

Before planting in the garden the young plants will need to be “hardened off”. to cope with outdoor conditions by moving them to a sheltered place outside for a week- protecting them from hot sun and wind. If frost is forecast cover them up or bring them inside for protection and take them out again the next morning. This process toughens the plant’s cell structure and reduces transplant shock and scalding.

Direct Sowing

Choose a location in full sun with well-drained soil.

Prepare the bed by turning the soil under to a depth of 6 – 12 inches, removing any debris, and lightly raking as level as possible.

Add three inches of sand and mix it into the top six inches of the soil. Rake the soil until it is smooth. Scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil but do not cover with soil as they need light to germinate. Water gently until the top three inches of the soil is moist.

Allow the soil to dry before watering again. Although the plant is drought tolerant, consistent irrigation will keep it in bloom. After the flowering season allow some flower heads to remain on the plant to allow them to self-seed ready for next year.

Coreopsis is a slender plant growing to between 1 – 2 feet. It is known for its small but abundant yellow flowers, with a maroon centre.

Provides a strong yellow/orange dye. It is a pretty wildflower native to the U.S.A. Very attractive to bees and butterflies.
