When planning your dyeing session make sure you have all the neccessary accessories to hand – below are a few essential products to assist you,
GLOVES – I recommend using gloves when working with the dyes. Although they are non-toxic they can stain!
MASK-I advise wearing a dust mask/respirator, gloves and an apron with all powders as they can be irritating to the nose, throat and skin.
pH STRIPS –pH neutral (pH7) water should be used for rinsing and washing naturally dyed fibres and fabrics – otherwise there may be unwanted colour changes. A set of pH strips is a good way to test the water.
DIGITAL THERMOMETER – important for checking the temperature of either garment scouring or dye processes.
MEASURING SPOONS – using a measuring spoon you can be accurate in your dyeing. You can reproduce recipes exactly. Using meausuring spoons means you can conserve the amount of dye powder used. You can produce half or double a recipe if you want to.
SAFETY GOGGLES – eye glasses or contact lenses will NOT protect eyes from splashes and powder. It is important to wear safety goggles when using chemicals.
